03How to Brush Your Teeth ProperlyA simple technique for effective daily cleaning

Step-by-Step Brushing

  • Wash your hands before brushing.
  • Put a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste on a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle toward the gum line.
  • Brush using small, gentle circular motions. Avoid scrubbing hard.
  • Clean the outer and inner surfaces of all teeth using the same gentle circular motion.
  • Brush the chewing surfaces with short back-and-forth strokes.
  • For the inside of the front teeth, hold the toothbrush vertically and use gentle up-and-down strokes.
  • Gently brush your tongue to remove bacteria and help freshen your breath.
  • Brush for 2 minutes, twice a day—morning and before bed.
  • Spit out the toothpaste after brushing. Avoid rinsing with water immediately so fluoride stays on the teeth longer.
  • Replace your toothbrush or electric toothbrush head every 3–4 months, or sooner if the bristles become worn.

Additional Tips

  • Clean between your teeth once a day using dental floss or interdental brushes.
  • Limit sugary foods and drinks, especially between meals.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and professional cleanings.
